Sudden illness or normal illness of cats needs proper care from you and your vet. Sometimes you need to treat a sick cat without going to the vet to save your cat’s life. To treat some sudden illness such as vomiting or diarrhea instantly, you should know how to take care of your cat. Here are some steps you should take while you think that your cat is sick:

  • Provide your cat a soft and peaceful sleeping palace.
  • Do not try to play with your sick cat and do not irritate them.
  • Keep your children and other pets away from the sick cat.
  • Keep their food and water just near to them.
  • You should keep the litter box near to them.
  • You should try to feed them some proteins so that they can get some energy.
  • You can try canned food if they do not want to take their regular food.
  • Try to hydrate your cat.

Feeding the sick cat at home:

If your cat is sick and upset it will not eat. But if you can not make a meal for more than 24 hours, you should be worried about it. To tempt your cat to eat warm food so that aroma is released from the food. Pilchards will help because they provide a strong smell but provide it with a small quantity. Remove all the unwanted foods. Most of the cats like chicken, cat biscuits, and tuna. Provide these if they do not want to eat anything. If there is any swallowing problem, provide liquid food to your cat. Stroking or grooming the ill cats may encourage eating.

You should not be worried about all the symptoms or unusual activity of cats. Sometimes they cure it itself and sometimes it is normal. But if you think that your cat has a more serious problem, try to recognize it by observing the behavior for a long time.

Some common symptoms of cats illness:

  • Problem or difficulty in breathing.
  • Fluid from eyes and nose.
  • Vomiting or diarrhea.
  • Difficulty or little urination.
  • Lack of self-cleaning.
  • Sudden weight loss or weight gain.

If you feel any symptoms from the list you should take action and those should be:

  • Give your cat a comfortable temperature. Provide blankets if it is cool and give a shade to it if it is too hot. 
  • Make sure it has sufficient water availability.
  • Clean the nose and eyes if liquids come from them. 
  • If the cat does not drink water, provide wet food to it.
  • Provide a dark and calm environment and keep it from children.

How to treat a sick cat after an accident without going to the vet:

Most of the time cats are fearless so they do some risky activities such as climbing a higher place, jumping toa long distances, and so on. So try to keep your cat in your home but if you think you can have any injury due t jump or incident try to figure out these injuries:

  • Problems in moving. 
  • The painful feeling while touching.
  • Bleeding from the affected area.
  • Breathing problem or cardiac arrest.

If you see any wounds in the cat’s skin, clean it with saline solutions and prevent your cat from licking it. If your cat continues to lick warp a clean cloth to prevent licking.

For the burn, the injury uses cold running water for 10 minutes and takes the cat to the vet.

CPR to the cat:

For some serious injury such as a traffic accident, you may provide CPR to your cat to save its life.

When does your cat need CPR:

Provide CPR to your cat if only they need it. To determine whether your cat needs CPR or not simply check two things.

  • check the breath and movement of the chest. Feel the breath by putting your hand in front of the nose of the cat.
  • Check for a heartbeat by placing your hand on the cat’s chest. You should check at the left side of the chest.

If there is no sign of heartbeat you should start the CPR by following the steps:

  • First, check for any obstacles in the mouth and remove them.
  • Put the tongue inside the mouth and ensure the air can flow by the nose.
  • Give breath every 4 to 5 seconds.
  • After three to five breaths check for a heartbeat and breathing.
  • If the heartbeat returns without breathing continue to give breath for approximately 10 breaths per minute.
  • If a heartbeat is absent
  • Take your cat and lay it on a side to a flat surface.
  • Grasp your cat’s chest and give a quick squeeze and compress the chest to one-third of a normal position.
  • Repeat this 100-120 times per minute, After 30 compression provides two breaths.

What to feed a cat with diarrhea and vomiting:

Food for cat with diarrhea:

You should provide the balanced fiber that is essential for the good bacteria of the cat’s stomach. Also, you can provide home-prepared boiled rice or pasta with chicken. The chicken will be skinless.  

To help your cat you can give some antidiarrheal medicine and probiotics. Probiotics are good bacteria that support the inner health of a cat. Metronidazole and tylosin are commonly used worldwide for diarrhea. You can provide some dewormers after consulting with your vet.

Food for cat with vomiting:

A cat can vomit for several reasons. If your cat vomits chronic and acutely, you should diet. Try to give your food that is easily digestible and has high energy. Providing human food such as meat flavored baby food or boiled to the cat. These are not the complete food for the cat but they can help.

If changing the diet does not improve the situation you should contact your vet as soon as possible.
